In this issue, we would like to reflect on the life of Nic Hastings-James, a towering advocate, a beacon of compassion, a lifetime member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and a life member of the Youth Affairs Council of WA (YACWA). Nic, who died almost one year ago, on 25 April 2023, leaves a strong legacy – in his contributions to social work and youth work in Western Australia and beyond, it is a timely reminder of the impact one life can make to the betterment of our world.

Nic’s professional journey was marked by dedication and service. Deeply involved in community organisations and projects throughout his career, he impacted diverse areas including social justice, youth empowerment and advocacy on alcohol and suicide.

Throughout his career, Nic supervised newly qualified social workers and worked across metropolitan and rural WA. His colleagues and friends spoke often of his deep understanding of social issues and the importance of social work in creating real and sustained change.

A staunch advocate for marginalised populations, Nic was involved in numerous initiatives which spanned policy development, service provision and education. He worked with national and local organisations including YACWA and the Australian Youth Policy Action Coalition.

Nic was known for his warm, inclusive approach to practice and collaboration. He was generous with his time and supported many early-career social workers to navigate the profession.

In his later years, he continued to advocate for issues close to his heart and his service on the boards of various youth-focused organisations and policy advisory committees continued well into his retirement. His work on community-led programs for youth suicide prevention and alcohol and drug-related harm remain as part of his lasting legacy.

As we reflect on Nic’s remarkable contributions, the AASW extends sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We remember Nic Hastings-James as a kind, compassionate, and fiercely committed social worker whose legacy continues to inspire.
