Wednesday 25 August 2021 NSW Branch - Connect:ED Webinar - Interactional Supervision Part 1

Interactional Supervision - Part 1

Presenters: Marie Heydon and Pam Cohen

This webinar will begin by describing the theoretical building blocks of the interactional supervision model most widely understood within the profession. As participation in supervision is a requirement of the AASW Code of Ethics, both supervisors and supervisees hope that the experience will be as positive and constructive as possible. The supervisor has to integrate the role of educator with that of provider of support and often quality oversight of the supervisee’s clients. These three functions do not always sit comfortably together. Understanding the parallels between supervision and other helping relationships will help the supervisor develop an integrated and interactional style.

This AASW NSW Connect:ED webinar is part of a series helping Social Workers to connect with new ideas and reflect on their own practice. We focus on bringing everyday social workers to talk about their practice, ideas and experiences of social work. Connect:ED Webinars are 30 minutes (including short Q&A) and where agreed with the presenter, will be recorded for those who cannot participate in real time.

Interactional Supervision - Part 2

Presenters: Marie Heydon and Pam Cohen

This session will focus on enhancing critical reflection in supervision, including working to ensure that there is space and context for learning. This often means that a shift needs to take place in the role from expert to facilitator. New supervisors may have ambivalence about the power and authority inherent in the role, particularly when it is necessary to have difficult conversations in the supervision forum.

13 September 2021 Trauma Informed Practice for Young People with Complex Support Needs
Virtual Workshop

As social workers we may learn the basics about trauma, development, attachment and the effects of neglect in these experiences during our degrees. However, the practical application of this knowledge and the subsequent skills are difficult to maintain or obtain if workers are not adequately supported through supervision, ongoing training or experience and an unsupportive or risk averse team and organisational culture.

Trauma informed practice requires a high level understanding of your own practice framework, values and reactions to what can be difficult and stressful scenarios for clients. It requires ongoing training, supervision, support and a positive and trauma informed work environment/organisational framework.

This 3 hour interactive virtual workshop gives an opportunity for social workers to refresh and learn through experiential activities, case study reflections and delivery of knowledge.
