The LGBTIQ+ Ally Practice Group is open to social workers and students who have an interest in advancing LGBTIQ+ rights, advocacy, wellness, safety and social work practice, and advocating for laws, policies and services that include LGBTIQ+ communities. This practice group will provide necessary tools, information and resources to enhance social workers’ practice in this area.

Seminar

The Student Series: Social Workers in Practice provides opportunity for students to hear from professional social workers about their work and build connections within the profession. There are 8 events planned for 2019, between March and November.

Our September speaker will be Anita Willey, who will present by webinar.

Anita is a social worker who lives and works in the Central West region of NSW and represents a regional voice on the AASW NSW Branch Management Committee. Anita has worked with people from vulnerable backgrounds including homeless youth and adults in Canberra, children at significant risk of harm in Tasmania, and asylum seekers on Nauru. Anita worked as a refugee assessor in Sydney and was employed by Population Health to assist the Tasmanian Government in responding to the health needs of settled refugees. After completing maternity leave and choosing Bathurst as her home 11 years ago, Anita has worked in various mental health settings and is now the team leader of specialist mental health services in the regional town of Bathurst. She presents at conferences on topics including trauma, suicide and self-harm, and voice hearing and has been invited to speak to many local services about mental health and wellbeing. Anita is committed to continued professional development and is dedicated to the social work profession.

Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 September 2019 NSW Branch - Working Therapeutically with Complex Trauma Clients (level 2) - a three-phased approach - 11 & 12 Sep 2019
Interactive Workshop

This training is designed for practitioners who work in a counselling and/or therapeutic relationship with complex trauma clients, and utilise clinical assessment, case formulation and treatment/care planning in their daily practice. This two-day interactive professional development training presents the three-phased approach for working ‘bottom up and top down’ with clients who have complex trauma histories. Informed by current research, it assumes foundational knowledge around complex trauma, trauma-informed practice, attachment theory and affective neuroscience, and builds on it.

*Can count towards AASW Mental Health Accreditation CPD requirements*
