Date Event Location
30 June 2020 EXPRESSION OF INTEREST - Political Social Work Practice Group
Meeting

A place to collaborate and discuss the social work profession and its role regarding client advocacy and influencing political environments. The practice group will also include using political social work practice within our own areas of practice, organisations, communities - local, state, national, and international level. Political social work is social work practice, theory, and research that focuses on the use of policy and politics to create social change. This practice group is a place for all social workers, regardless of practice area, to develop their understanding and ethical obligation to engage in social and political action, how to lobby and engage decision makers, or for anyone interested in applying social justice to politics and policy. Participants of the practice group will learn how politics impacts the lives of those that they serve on both a micro and macro level, practice skills for advocating to policymakers, gain tools to empower clients to become politically engaged, and explore opportunities for running for office.

Wednesday 15 July 2020 NSW Branch - Connect:ED Webinar Series
Webinar

0.5 CPD hour

The meanings and place of the body for families grieving expected and unexpected death.

Social workers have a role in facilitating helpful grief practices and providing support in the aftermath of a death. The meanings and interactions with the deceased body are an important aspect of grief for bereaved family members. Previous research has illuminated aspects of the body for bereaved families after a death reported to the coroner. In this talk Jane will draw together this research along with new findings from a current recent research project to explore the place of the deceased body in the meanings and rituals of bereaved family members after an expected (palliative care) death at home and hospital.

Presenter: Dr Jane Mowll is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and a senior lecturer at the University of NSW where she convenes the Master of Counselling Social Work. Jane is a practising therapist and also researches in the areas of bereavement, grief and loss.

This AASW Connect:ED webinar is part of a new series helping Social Workers to connect with new ideas and reflect on their own practice. We will focus on bringing everyday social workers to talk about their practice, ideas and experiences of social work. Webinars will be 30mins (including short Q&A) and will be recorded for those who can not participate in real time.

Register for the seventh in a new series of webinars for all social workers.
