19 March 2020 A Practical Approach to Narrative Therapy: Reclaiming lives and understanding shame
Workshop

This workshop, facilitated by Tim Donovan and Dale Johns, demonstrates the application of narrative therapy approaches to counselling people who have been subject to acts of oppression. The workshop includes a specific account of Dale’s experiences of childhood sexual violence. What is presented will contest traditional ideas around counselling. There will be an opportunity to explore your beliefs around vulnerability and shame in your own work.

The workshop will provide practical ways to use narrative therapy approaches for deconstructing unhelpful cultural discourses or myths; for identifying and strengthening the skills and knowledge people have regarding their own problems; and for encouraging connection with preferred ways of being.

The Focused Psychological Strategies workshop offers a comprehensive and accessible exploration of the broad and eclectic strategies contained in the Medicare protocol. Beginning with a brief historical overview of mental health interventions, we then investigate the theoretical underpinnings, diagnostic categories and treatment strategies of the four main therapeutic modalities: psychological (cognitive behavioural therapy and neuroscience), psychotherapeutic (the unconscious mind and ‘therapeutic relationship’), systemic (family and narrative) and holistic (mindfulness and mind/body). This two day workshop includes a colourful slide presentation, individual experiential exercises, pair-work and group discussions; and the opportunity to develop and consolidate your therapeutic skills and knowledge.
