Supporting Students on Placement
Bruce Hart, Field Education Coordinator, Social Work/Community and Human Services, Federation University Australia
Trent Kooyman, Scholarly Teaching Fellow, Social Work/Community and Human Services, Federation University Australia
Bruce and Trent from Federation University will join us for this professional development opportunity to discuss supervising and supporting students on placement.
This session aims to be relevant to all social workers, including current fieldwork supervisors, potential fieldwork supervisors, current students and recent graduates (who can reflect on their placements). If you are not sure if you would be able to host a student for a placement, please come along to find out more about it!
Topics to be discussed:
- Rights for students on placement, and where students can go for support (especially when they feel powerless to speak up)
- What preparation does a potential supervisor need + how to get started and design a new student placement
- What support and training is available for supervisors from the education provider or elsewhere (e.g. the AASW)
- What support is available for students from their education provider or elsewhere
- What key things do supervisors and students need to know to be successful
- Cultural sensitivity considerations for placements
- Rural context and support for students who relocate
Bruce is the fieldwork coordinator for the Master of Social Work program and Trent is the fieldwork coordinator for the Bachelor of Community and Human Services at Federation University. Bruce and Trent will talk to us from their experience at Federation University about supportive placements for students + current and future opportunities.
