Identifying Signs of Harmful Sexual Behaviour in Children Under 10 Years

Harmful Sexual Behaviour displayed by children under 10 can be confusing, distressing and very difficult for families and carers to manage. Research recommends that this behaviour should be viewed within the context of healthy sexual behaviour, the child’s development, their social environment, and their emotional wellbeing.

This course will allow learners to be able to recognise, and understand what Harmful Sexual Behaviour is and how to initiate next steps when working with children presenting with these behaviours, as well as supporting families and carers.

Learning outcomes:

• Understand the foundational concepts relating to harmful sexual behaviour for children under 10 years.
• Identify what constitutes healthy and unhealthy sexual behaviour for all the developmental stages of children.
• Understand the pathways and function of harmful sexual behaviour for children.
• Identify and develop appropriate evidence-based interventions when responding to children who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour.
