We are excited to have Hamish Whelan (he/they) present. Hamish is the Sexual Violence Consult Service Lead at ACON Health.
A dynamic and engaging session designed to support Social Workers—both new and experienced—in deepening their understanding of sexual violence and the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQA+ community in seeking help after a sexual assault. Together, we’ll explore how to better respond to and support LGBTQA+ clients. We'll unpack the gendered drivers of violence through an intersectional lens and discuss the systemic and personal barriers that may prevent disclosure or reporting. This is an opportunity to reflect on your current practice, hear from others in the field, and gain fresh perspectives. Please come prepared with questions or a case to discuss!
Hamish Whelan (he/they) is originally from Aotearoa (New Zealand) has a Bachelor of Psychology from Macquarie University and extensive experience in mental health, disability, community, and peer support, Hamish brings invaluable insights and lived experience to the training. Hamish uses their lived experience of sexual violence to advocate for all victim-survivors and promote safer, more inclusive services. They have previously delivered training to various services, including Justice Health, NSW Police, Health Clinics, Hospitals, and Community Legal Centres.
