Live Online Webinar
Capability levels: Emerging, Evolving, Established
As social workers, we understand how discrimination and marginalization can impact mental health and wellbeing. With all the knowledge we have, sometimes we are still left questioning what more can we do? This webinar goes a step further by using queer theory as a practice framework to challenge systems of oppression, allowing for nuance and flexibility in identity and experience.
PSA: You do not need to be queer to use queer theory!
Queer theory offers essential insight for contemporary social work by challenging normative assumptions about gender, sexuality, and identity. Its emphasis on non-pathologizing approaches directly counters the social work professions problematic history of treating queer identities as disorders and pathologizing clients.
The use of queer theory helps us improve as social workers by examining our own assumptions about gender, sexuality, relationships and family structures, creating safer and more inclusive spaces for clients. Queer theory shows us the power of recognizing identity as fluid and complex, allowing us to meet our clients where they are in a strengths-based and affirming way.
This webinar will explore queer theory, why it’s important and relevant to social work, and how it can be applied to practice using case study examples and reflective questions. This webinar will highlight how you can use queer theory with all clients, regardless of identity.
Who should attend?
This webinar is suited for social workers working in a therapeutic setting. This is suitable for social workers wanting to expand on their knowledge about working with relationships, sexuality and gender.
