The AASW branch invites you to this seminar, Working with Fathers and Families run by Dr Joseph Fleming. This seminar will explore the importance of the fathers’ role in family services and how programs can engage and support this opportunity. It will allow participants to review strengths-based ways to engage men using a child-centred approach and is full of practical tools, tips and links to resources that will significantly add to practice outcomes towards working effectively with men and families.

This seminar will cover a range of topics including;

  • Understanding what men might want when accessing community services.
  • Using strengths-based approaches when working with men.
  • Engaging men in child protection issues and family-based programs.
  • Exploring skills used to work with men in a non-threatening way and modelling effective, respectful and inclusive communication when working with men.
  • Working with fathers to increase their engagement in their children’s lives.
  • Engaging fathers using the father-inclusive practice and the generative framework.
  • Effective ways for female workers to work with men.
Dr Joseph Fleming
Joseph has over 23 years of experience in social work. He has a special interest in working with people and communities that are often described as 'hard to reach or engage'. Joseph is passionate about research and is a published author and has presented at numerous seminars and conferences. He is currently a Specialist Team Leader - Intensive Family Services - Contract with Uniting Care West. He has had significant experience working in regional areas in WA and the NT. Joseph is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, a member of the Australian College of Social Workers and obtained his Post-Graduate Bachelor of Social Work, UWA (1994), Master of Social Work from Monash University(2000), Doctor of Philosophy from Monash University (2013).
