Purpose

The Individual Funding Social Work Practice Group offers peer support and information sharing to any social worker interested in individualised funding services. This includes individual practice, community development and service system design in the disability and aged care fields amongst others. Disability services are being transformed by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and aged care by consumer directed care (CDC) and new roles and opportunities are evolving that are available to social workers.

Aims

The Practice Group meets every two months to share ideas, strategies and innovative approaches to working as a social worker in the individual funding environment.

Eligibility

Open to all social workers with an interest in this field of practice.

Meetings and Opportunities for 2021

All meetings are held currently held via zoom videoconference from 6pm to 8pm.

Monday 8 February 2021
This will be our first meeting for the year.
Our guest speaker will be Jan Kruger, the Executive Director of Imagine More in the ACT. Jan has extensive experience in supporting people with disability, their families, and supports to find innovative ways of helping people with disability lead a good and fulfilling life. She will discuss how social workers can contribute and find employment in the field and will answer any questions.

Monday 7 June 2021 (NOTE NEW DATE)
Our guest speaker will be Mr Robert Fitzgerald, AM, the NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner who investigates abuse and neglect.Robert Fitzgerald, AM will bring a wealth of experience and insights to our meeting. Although individual funding and self-managing have not been the focus of Mr. Fitzgerald’s work, he is willing to answer any questions you may have about abuse and safety based on his breadth of experience.

Our guest speaker will be Anna Millicar, Aged Care Specialist, speaking on 'Maximising individualised funding in aged care.' This is a free event but please register here.

Bridie Shea, Senior Manager, Local Area Coordination, City of Darebin & Yarra, Brotherhood of St Laurence is speaking about the NDIS on Zoom from 6-8 pm . Email ISWPG@aasw.asn.au to request an invitation to the meeting.

Monday 15 June 2020
Malitha Perera from the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) will speak on 'NDIS - inclusion of individuals in communities.' Malitha is Manager of the BSL Local Area Coordination (LAC) team. They help people plan for NDIS support and have a focus on assisting people to be included in the community. Malitha was a community mental health occupational therapist (OT) in the Port Phillip and Stonnington areas prior to taking this role. He brings a mental health and community development perspective.

The guest speaker at our next meeting will be Angus Kerr. Angus is a Social Worker and Managing Director of LiveWell Care. For the past 8 years Angus has been working in private practice. Much of Angus' work is supporting individuals and their families navigate the community aged care sector so they can make informed decisions when choosing how they access aged care support and services.

Monday 14 October 2019
Speakers from Inclusion Melbourne, a leading, innovative disability service that moved away from day centres and provided individual services for years before the NDIS began, will discuss their work and opportunities for social workers in the NDIS.

Monday 12 August 2019
The speaker will be Sarah Forbes, Advocacy Manager at VALID, an advocacy service for people with intellectual disability working closely with the NDIS. Sarah has a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges the NDIS brings, and will discuss VALID's work plus opportunities for social workers to work with the NDIS.

Monday 3 June 2019
A representative from the Summer Foundation will speak about young people with disabilities who have complex needs and are at risk of entering an aged care residential service, or are already in an aged care service, and how the NDIS can support them to access alternative housing and support.

Monday 8 April 2019
This meeting will differ from the usual as we won't have a guest speaker. Instead, members of the group will share their experiences of individual funding - be this the NDIS or Consumer-Directed Care (CDC) in aged care. Everyone who has direct experience is invited to contribute.

Monday 11 February 2019
Guest Speaker Meredith Coote, General Manager at MABLE (formerly Better Caring) will explain their web based support worker recruitment service for the disability and aged fields. Some members are concerned about workers conditions in this web negotiated environment – this should make for some interesting questions.
