Ken Mellor (1942 -)

Ken Mellor circa early 1990s

Immediately after leaving school, Ken began actuarial training with a life assurance company, before deciding this was not the life for him. He then began an Honours Arts degree in Philosophy and Pure Maths at Monash University. Partway through this program he began to think of social work as a possible career, and in 1967 he secured a cadetship with the Social Welfare Branch, and enrolled in the Diploma of Social Studies at The University of Melbourne.

His first position after graduating was with the Foster Care and Adoptions Section of the Social Welfare Department, a position for which he felt so completely unprepared and unqualified that he borrowed money to repay the cadetship, and resigned from the Department. He then secured a position with The Church of All Nations, working there with programs for migrants until early 1973, when he moved to The University of Melbourne for a year before leaving to travel to the USA to further his study of Transactional Analysis. He returned to Australia in late 1975, and from early 1976 worked in his private practice in both Australia and New Zealand, consulting with individuals and groups and teaching Transactional Analysis, which at that time was new to Australia, and doing some part-time teaching in the Department of Social Studies at The University of Melbourne. At this time Ken also studied a range of psychotherapeutic approaches, including eastern spiritual meditation practices, and incorporated many of them into his model of practice. In 1980 he published Taking Charge, a book he describes as a “think structure” on how to approach a variety of challenging situations with other people.

In 1984 Ken and his wife, also a social worker, established a not-for-profit incorporated association, The Awakening Network. The Network offered assistance in the area of personal growth, teaching therapeutic skills, parenting and couple relationship skills, meditation and spiritual development; it also offers consultation related to organisational development. The Awakening Network was incorporated in England and New Zealand, and at the time of the interview in August 1996 was active in France, Canada and the USA, as well as in Australia.
