Live Online Workshop

Silence around mental health in CaLD families is rarely neutral - it can either protect or fracture connection across generations.
This interactive 3-hour online workshop gives social workers practical tools to open up safer family conversations. Using lived experience stories, case studies, and role plays, we’ll explore how stigma, cultural scripts, and migration histories shape what is said - and unsaid - in CaLD families.
Participants will practise culturally safe questioning, reframing strategies, and identity-affirming communication. By the end of the session, they will walk away with concrete tools to reduce stigma, strengthen belonging, and support families to bridge generational divides.
Designed for evolving and established practitioners, this skills-based workshop turns silence into connection and equips you to facilitate conversations that honour culture and strengthen family cohesion.
Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for social workers and practitioners supporting CaLD families across mental health, child protection, family services, and education. It is suited to professionals who facilitate intergenerational dialogue, promote family cohesion, and work to reduce stigma. Both established practitioners seeking fresh, culturally responsive approaches and evolving practitioners wanting to strengthen their confidence in navigating intergenerational and culturally complex conversations will benefit. No prior specialist knowledge is required—the workshop is accessible to practitioners at all stages who wish to embed cultural humility and identity-affirming practices into everyday family work.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

Please consider the AASW CPD Policy regarding FPS when logging your FPS hours manually.
In the event of audit, it is the member's responsibility to clearly demonstrate how this FPS training is relevant to the delivery of FPS in their specific work context.
This Workshop is not recorded, however, you will have access to materials and resources on AASW Online Learning for 4 weeks after the completion of the workshop.
