Joanna Crawshaw (1934 -2014)

Born in England, Joanna Crawshaw trained as a social worker at Edinburgh University between 1955 and 1956, then in 1957 completed a one year Almoners’ Course through what became The Institute of Medical Social Workers in London. Her first position as a qualified social worker was with the Hammersmith Post Graduate Medical School in London, followed by a period as a locum at the Princess Louise Children’s Hospital, where she developed a life-long interest in psychotherapy when she worked with child psychiatrist Dr Donald Winnicott. After periods at King’s College Hospital and Westpark Psychiatric Hospital Joanna migrated to Australia, arriving in 1965.

From her first position in Melbourne at the Alfred Hospital, Joanna moved to the National Heart Foundation, where she was involved in pioneering work related to the psychosocial aspects of the rehabilitation of patients who had been treated for major coronary artery disease. In 1973 she became Senior Social Worker at Prince Henry’s Hospital, then spent time working on a research project evaluating the psychosocial aspects of the new technique of heart by-pass surgery.

With a growing interest in psychoanalytically based counseling, Joanna moved to the Marriage Guidance Council before taking a position in the new field of community health. While Senior Social Worker at the Maroondah Social and Community Health Centre, Joanna worked towards her Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy Diploma in Adult Psychotherapy, which she completed in 1994. Joanna then established a private psychotherapy practice before returning permanently to England shortly after her Oral History Project interview on September 16, 1996.
